The paper examines certain statements on the issue of integrated art put forward by Nikolai Kulbin (1868-1917) and Arthur Lourie (1891-1966). In Russia, the idea to integrate literature, painting, and music in the unified form of art was first suggested by N. Kulbin (1868-1917). He believed that the core of integrated art is based on harmony and dissonance. The author of the paper defines them as a dialectical philosophical pair. It is indivisible and "lives" in the temporal dimension. The associative sequence concerning a
philosophical couple of harmony and dissonance is considered in a form of the physical-and-mathematical triangle of energy, a figure (shape) and space transformation of the latter. Kulbin’s concept became a basis for the first manifesto on the issue of integrated art "We and the West" (1914) written by three co-authors-and-futurists B. Livshits (literature), G. Yakulov (painting), and A. Lourie (music).
The paper proposes the interpretation of the postulates required for integrated art, general ones as well as specific musical constituents. The author’s interpretation relies upon Lourie’s writings with concern on the elements of musical language and their functioning in the musical form.
The paper bases on Kulbin’s two essays "Free Music" in two versions (1909, 1910) and "Free art" (1910), a manifesto "We and the West" (1914) by B. Livshits, B. Yakulov, and A. Lourie, and the speech to the youth-artists of Caucasia "We and the West" (1917) by A. Lourie.
