In recent years, the evolutionary paradigm is gaining increasing popularity as the most plausible scientific explanation of human origin, even among evangelical Christians, theologians and lay people alike. This trend inevitably raises the thorny question of the “historicity” of Adam, and in the debate Paul the Apostle is typically appealed to as the key witness to the issue, since it is he that connects the story of Adam with the death and resurrection of Christ in a way that, so it seems to many, makes the two virtually inseparable.
The study begins with a brief introduction of the debate over the historicity of Adam to ascertain the significant role Paul plays in the debate. This is followed by an examination of a few important texts where Paul explains the soteriological role of Christ without bringing Adam into his discussion, together with such topics as sin and death which figure prominently in the debate at hand, Here it is argued that Adam, important as he is in some ways, is by no means an indispensible element in Paul’s soteriological understanding.
The study then turns to those texts where Adam and Eve are referred to in a non-soteriological context. By tracing Paul’s innovative and variegated handling of the Genesis stories, it demonstrates that the Paul’s thinking starts from his prior conviction about the gospel of Christ and that determines the way he utilizes his knowledge of Adam and Eve to boost the Christological points he is making.
Then follows a discussion of Romans 5 and 1 Corinthians 15, the most important texts in the debate. By probing the way Paul utilizes the biblical figure of Adam in his theological and soteriological discourse, the study tries to show that it is not Adam but Christ that sustains Paul’s line of thinking, and that Adam, though certainly historical for Paul himself, is by no means an indispensible ‘constant’ in Paul’s theological discourse. The study concludes with a review of some of its major points and a few exegetical and hermeneutical implications relevant to the question of the historical Adam.
