Purpose: This research focuses on the experience of female bowlers from the beginning of their career and how the bowlers impose the meaning on the experience with relation to gender hierarchy.
Method: Oral life history approach was used as the research method. First, we used purposeful sampling to select final interviewees from four female senior bowlers who affiliated with region ‘A’ bowling association. Semi-structured interview was proceeded first and then unstructured interview proceeded. The interview was conducted face to face four or five times between May 2017 and November 2017 with 60 to 90 minutes per person each time. In addition, research papers, the official website, books, news articles and broadcast media were collected and used as the supplementary material. Data were analysed by textual analysis method. Peer debriefing, self reflection, thick description, and members check were used for authenticity of the study. Before the interview, the researcher explained the purpose of the research to the interviewee and how the result is going to be used. After the explanation, interviewee agreed to participate in the interview.
Results: The experience of female senior bowlers with the view of their oral life history is explained below. Bowling gives them 1. the opportunities to reinterpret their traditional gender role. 2. the challenge to the field of bowling which is male-centered. 3. the function as a medium of preparatory socialization significant for others in building social networks. 4. the appropriateness for their appearance management & short skirt as bowling uniform.
Conclusion: First, this research discovers the experience of female senior bowlers who have passed through the modernization of Korean bowling directly or indirectly with the view of gender. Second, female senior bowlers have struggled with inner mind and have made their sub-culture with appropriate response to outer environment. Third, for the female bowlers, the bowling it self is functioning as the arena of consciousness of existence by identifying themselves with experiencing pleasure and satisfaction.
