Report Errors

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relation between foreign direct investment (FDI) and the changes in the Korean automotive industry"s trade structure. For empirical analysis, we study six countries, namely China, the Czech Republic, India, Slovakia, the U.S. and Germany. We chose these countries because the South Korean automotive companies have made large FDIs in the first five countries, and have extensive trade with Germany. We found that Korean automotive FDIs have led to increases in the trade of automotive parts, but regarding intra-industry trade (IIT), their effects differed across countries. While China, the Czech Republic, and India in 1998 experienced increases in IIT, the FDIs’ effect on IIT were negligible for the U.S., Slovakia and India in 2007.
