Sea Limited has demonstrated rapid and steady growth over the past decade in the most rapidly developing region and industry. Beginning with a social gaming platform, Garena, it recently expanded its footprints to e-commerce and payment system to facilitate better user experience. This paper aims to have a comprehensive examination of the factors that have contributed to its success. The paper looks into Sea Limited’s disruptive innovation, competent strategic alliance/ecosystem management, and its exceptional corporate level strategy. The paper segments the success story of Sea Limited in three discrete chronological phases: Early Innovation, Strategic Alliance, and Corporate Level Strategy. The first two phases helped build foundations for Sea Limited in becoming the 3rd largest unicorn in the region within the last 10 years. They have also laid the foundation of a robust digital ecosystem in Greater Southeast Asia. In the third phase, Sea Limited’s recent diversification strategy will be discussed. The paper also analyzes Sea Limited’s current issues and prospects and provides optimal recommendations for the respective issues. In the end, the paper highlights the key lessons that could be gained from the case and presents the blueprint for other start-up companies in Asia.
