This article examines the aspects of ‘censorship of pornography’ maintained under different governance systems during the pre- and post-revolutionary period of Russia. The period of examination is from 1905 when the prior inspection was abolished by the ‘October Manifesto’ to 1922 when Glavlit appeared under the Bolshevik regime after the Revolution. The major target of our examination is limited to publications of this time period. The purpose of this study is to analyze representative cases of censorship related to pornography and to grasp the nature of censorship of the Russian state. In the confusion of the revolutionary period, the issue of pornography was used as a basis for oppressing and controlling opponents or opposition to the regime. However, the position of censorship on pornography is quite different before and after the Russian Revolution. Tsarist censorship was carried out under the pretext of protecting vulnerable people from pornography. So-called ‘patriarchal paternalism’ was the government’s position. In contrast, the censorship of the Bolshevik’s was much more politicized and subordinate to ideological lines. This difference in censorship is evident in the cases of M. P. Artsybashev, A. A. Verbitskaya, and B. A. Pilynyak. The criteria for censorship on pornography were not uniform but were linked to changes in the political system and public opinion. This allowed the same work to be accepted or rejected. In the end, censorship works in the context of both publishing and national rule. Assuming that the ultimate goal of state control lies in the stable maintenance and the development of the political system, the essence of Russian censorship functioned as an important mechanism for stability.
