This article highlights the differences in perspectives revealed by the dispute between Jang Ji-yeon (1864~1921) and Takahashi Toru (1878~1967), and examines how this affected the two scholars’ representative writings on Chosun Confucianism. In particular, it considers the philosophical problems surrounding the interpretive framework of juri (主理, centered on principle) and jugi (主氣, centered on energy) found in the scholars’ works in light of the tension between the history of philosophy and the history of thought. The central issue of the dispute between the two scholars is whether or not to distinguish between the yuja (儒者, Confucianist) and the yuhakja (儒學者, Confucian scholar), and how to interpret the history of Chosun Confucianism in relation to this distinction. Jang Ji-yeon, who was influenced by the dispute, later wrote Chosun yugyo yeonwon (The Origin of Korean Confucianism), in which he divided the two schools of Yi Hwang and Yi I based on the frame of juri and jugi. Influenced by Jang, Takahashi also chose the frame of juri and jugi to explain the history of Chosun Confucianism while trying to approach the topic of the Four-Seven Debate philosophically. This understanding process of the history of Chosun Confucianism suggests that the Korean philosophical community needs to focus more on the philosophical analysis of the concept of juri and jugi.

본고는 장지연(張志淵, 1864~1921)의 조선유학사에 대한 이해 과정과 그 특징을 밝히기 위해 다카하시 도루(高橋亨, 1878~1967)와의 지상논쟁(紙上論爭)에 나타나는 입장 차이와 이 논쟁이 그들의 유학 관련 대표 저술에 어떻게 상호 영향을 끼쳤는지 조명해보았다. 특히 그들 저서에서 발견되는 주리(主理)‧주기(主氣)의 해석틀에 관한 철학적 문제를 사상사와 철학사의 긴장 속에서 고찰하였다. 장지연은 󰡔매일신보󰡕에 게재된 다카하시의 강연 내용에 대해 공개질의를 함으로써 지상논쟁이 벌어지게 되었다. 논쟁의 핵심 쟁점은 유자(儒者)와 유학자(儒學者)의 구별 문제와 이에 관련된 조선유학사의 해석 문제였다. 다카하시는 실천적 실용적 유자와 유교를 대상으로 연구하는 유학자를 구분하는 입장에서, 조선의 유학자들은 당파를 이뤄 고담공론만을 행한다고 비판하였다. 이에 대해 장지연은 유자와 유학자는 구별될 수 없다는 입장에서 조선유학자들은 이론과 실천을 겸했다고 반박하였다. 그러나 성리학에 대한 비판적 견해는 다카하시와의 논쟁을 통해 뚜렷하게 부각되었다. 이후 장지연은 󰡔조선유교연원󰡕에서 유교를 대상화하여 바라보는 사상사의 관점을 강하게 나타냈고, 성리학이 붕당의 원인이라는 점을 승인하면서 조선유학의 성쇠를 전통적 연원록의 형식으로써 서술하였다. 이 과정에서 장지연은 주리와 주기 개념으로 이황과 이이 두 학파를 구별하였는데, 이는 다시 다카하시에 영향을 주게 된다. 식민사관에 투철했던 다카하시는 사칠논쟁으로 인한 붕당의 분기를 주리‧주기 개념으로써 해명하고자 하였으나, 연구를 진행하면서 조선성리학의 심오함을 절감하고 철학적으로 접근하는 시도를 하였다. 이 같은 조선유학사의 이해 과정은 앞으로 한국철학계가 다시금 주리‧주기 개념에 대한 철학적인 분석에 나서야 할 필요가 있음을 암시한다.
