(연구배경 및 목적) 제품과 서비스의 융합이 사회적, 산업적 측면에서 트렌드로 정착되어 가고 있다. 유형적인 제품과 무형적인 서비스를 결합하여 혁신적이고 지속가능한 가치를 창출하는 시스템(System)인 제품-서비스 시스템(Product-Service System : PSS)이 그것이다. 2000년대 초반에는 PSS가 후기산업사회가 안고 있는 대량생산과 대량소비의 맹목적인 수용으로 인한 환경오염, 자원고갈에 대한 환경적 문제해결의 접근법으로 시작되었지만, 최근에 들어서는 산업적, 기술적 측면을 넘어 사회적, 문화적 측면에 이르기까지 발전하고 있다. (연구방법) 디자인 연구 분야에서는 디자인이 PSS에 많은 디자인 요소들을 통하여 그 비전을 실행할 수 있도록 효과적인 수단을 제공해 왔음을 전제로, 본 연구에서는 PSS가 어떠한 과정을 통해 진화 발전되었는가를 고찰하였다. 그리고 PSS 디자인의 진화 요인이 무엇인지를 디자인 문화의 역사적인 흐름을 통해 이론적 고찰과 함께 선행연구를 기반으로 분석하였다. PSS 디자인의 본원적 의미를 논의하였고, 지속가능성을 위한 디자인(DfS) 분석 틀을 토대로 PSS 접근법의 진화를 논의하였다. 진화에 대한 분석 프레임은 제품디자인 혁신 수준 ·제품과 서비스 혁신 수준·사회 혁신 디자인 차원·기술-사회 및 전환 디자인 차원이었다. (결과) PSS가 생산-소비의 관점에서 제품 디자인 혁신 수단으로 다루어 졌지만 점차 사회문제혁신, 기술 사회혁신으로 진화함을 도출하였다. 첫째, PSS는 제품의 디자인 혁신도구로 진화하였다. 에코디자인, 그린 디자인, 애착 유발을 이끄는 감성적인 디자인의 접근법으로 수명주기에 중점을 두거나 제품 라이프 사이클 기반의 접근하는 경향을 보였다. 둘째, 초기 디자인 PSS에서는 인간중심의 본질적인 사회구조에 대하여는 상대적으로 중요도가 낮은 시기였으나 지식정보 새로운 기술이 등장하게 되면서 경제·사회시스템 구축에 대한 접근법으로 시도되었다. 셋째, 보다 더 나은 사회 응집성과 적응성을 형성하고 기존 공동체의 강화와 새로운 공동체를 구축하면서 사회 환경 변화를 촉진하는 사회혁신을 위한 접근법으로 진화하였다. (결론) PSS 디자인은 정체적이 아니라 동태적으로 진화하므로 PSS의 동태적인 특성상 보완성이 높아야 하며 이와 동시에 복잡성이 확대되는 것을 경계해야 한다는 시사점을 주었다. PSS의 진화 방향은 전환사회로의 접근이 될 것이다. 이를 위한 모든 이해관계자가 참여하는 사회적 환경, 거버넌스 구축이 필요하다. 향후 PSS 디자인 진화 논리를 바탕으로 구성된 프레임워크로 제품·서비스·이해관계자의 공진화로 지향하는 다양한 전환을 추구할 수 있을 것이다.

(Background and Purpose) Convergence between products and services is being established as a trend in social and industrial aspects. It is the PSS (Product-Service System) which is a system to create innovative and sustainable value by combining tangible products with intangible services. In the early 2000’s, the PSS started as an approach to solve environmental pollution or resource depletion resulted from blindly adopted mass production and mass consumption; however, nowadays, it is being developed in social and cultural aspects. (Method) Assuming that in the area of design research, design has been offering effective ways that can fulfill variety design elements. Moreover, this study has analyzed what factors have been evolving PSS design based on the historical flow of design culture grounded on theoretical consideration as well as literature review. Also discussed the original meaning of PSS design and the evolution of the PSS approach based on the Design for Sustainability (DfS) analysis frame. The analysis frame for evolution involves the product design innovation level ․ product and service innovation level·spatio-social innovation design level ․ socio-technical and transition design level. (Results) This study has found that in the perspective from production-consumption, the PSS was dealt with product design innovation. It also evolved as social problem innovation, technical, and social innovation. First, the PSS evolved as a tool of product design innovation. There was a trend to focus on eco-design, green design, or emotional design to induce attachment, adopt product life cycle-based approaches, and evaluate the product life cycle and then reflect it to product design. Second, in the early design PSS, relatively low importance was placed on the human-oriented fundamental social structure; however, as knowledge and information and new technology emerged, it was attempted as an approach to build up economic ․ social systems. Third, the PSS evolved as Systemic Design Innovation, and it was adopted in the perspectives of environment, corporate economy, and industry. Fourth, forming the cohesiveness and adaptability of an even better society, reinforcing existing communities, and building up new communities, it evolved as an approach for the sake of social innovation accelerating changes in social environment. (Conclusions) Since PSS design evolves dynamically, this study gives an implication that you should secure high complementation for the PSS in consideration of its dynamic characteristics and also be on the alert not to increase any complexity in it as well. The path to PSS’ evolution will be the approach for transition society. It is necessary to build up social environment and governance to participate considerations. With the framework constructed through the logic of evolution of PSS design, it will be possible to pursue a variety of transition directed through the co-evolution of products ·services·the users concerned afterwards.
