ince the late 1990s in Korean literature research, overall, 'history of literature' has been an object of criticism and deconstruction rather than a subject of renewal. Such a flow began to have a change with the advent of a new type of agents for politics and social movements in a Korean society. Recently, new social movements like the candlelight revolt and feminism were activated so writing of a 'new history of literature' based on such subjectivity is being demanded. It was after the 1987 democratization movement when contents and composition of modern literary history which had been criticised for over 20 years were completed. Paying attention to these contexts above, this paper examined flows and controversies around the history of literature after the 1987 democratization movement from three phases and investigated meanings generated from these processes from a context of the literary history. The first phase was the time when Korean modern history of literature oriented toward national literature and realism was completed through the lifting of the ban after the democratization. However, modern history of literature came to a crisis simultaneously with its completion by the collapse of the real socialism and post-modern discourse. The second was the period when criticism was directed toward writing of the modern literary history right along the line in a tendency where post-national·post-modern discourse dominated the Korean culture of knowledge. In those days, the history of literature was an object of deconstruction entirely. The third was the time when reconstitution of the literary history beyond criticism and deconstruction was done with the methodology of the new literary research based on the cultural studies as a new type of political subjectivity transcending the modern nationality appeared. This paper gave a critical review on accomplishments and limitations of the inquiry into the literary history for more than 30 years, pondering upon conditions and potentials for writing today's new history of literature.
