Social conflict and lack of trust makes social integration impossible in Korean society. This study sprang from the question of “what direction does character education need to hold with a view to contributing to social integration?”Korean society changes the focus of education from character education to democratic citizenship education and seeks to foster a just citizen with social participatory competence and critical thinking. When character education is weakened on a policy level and democratic citizenship education is highlighted, it is necessary to establish a future-oriented direction for character education. The mid- and long-term direction of character education needs to move toward civic character education that emphasizes fostering critical thinking in harmony with moral commitment in that character education toward ‘good persons’ and ‘morality’ is the foundation of democratic citizenship education toward ‘good citizens’ and ‘citizenship’, and civic character can be guaranteed from both sides' perspectives. Furthermore, civic character education needs to be directed toward‘virtuous’citizenship and‘healthy’citizenship based on the reconstruction of traditional values and social demand for emotional and social health.
