Though the recognition of Sijo as a major genre of the period ceased due to modern conditions, it still has its place and potential in modern literature. This is because Sijo exhibits anti-modern fervor in the missing original form which reflects the modern era. The aesthetics of Sijo by Cheolun Cho, Jong-hyun pioneered the narrow segment of modern literature. Cho, Jong-hyun had repeatedly depicted a poetic world that deeply contemplated life and truth through Buddhism. His Sijo could be divided into three kinds: first, nationalistic, where his Sijo showed an awareness of reality; second, exploring nature, where he sung archetypal songs on nature; third, dealing with the world of Buddhist thoughts and contemplation. As a poet and former monk, Cho wrote Sijo in the Buddhist sense and his thoughts had acentral axis. He is recorded in the history of modern Sijo as a poet who united Buddhist thought and the literary wealth of Sijo. His Sijo works have remarkable poetic quality that enliven our senses. His language is an example of living in the modern society and depicts aesthetic knots between thoughts and senses, lyricism and recognition, and tradition and modernity. Revealing the sensuous and extroverted world, his poetic spirit proves that Sijo is not an outdated medieval creation, but a genre that has the possibility of simultaneously maintaining both its nationalistic identity as well as literary dignity.
