During the fiscal year of 2018, 212 child guidance centers nationwide responded to a preliminary figure of approximately 160,000 child-abuse consultations, which was the highest ever. In cases of abuse or suspected abuse, children can be temporarily protected by child guidance centers based in prefectures or ordinance-designated cities irrespective of their parents’ consent. Furthermore, child guidance center outsources the temporary protection of infants to other institutions.
This study examines nursery teachers and nurses in charge of infants’ temporary care to assess the outcomes of their mental health using Nishida’s(2000) shortened psychological well-being scale. More widely, the study elucidates the well-being of professionals in charge of temporary child-protection based on the Masanori Higashi’s scale. Additionally, it clarifies the relationship between factors that influence the temporary care of children and the well-being of temporary protection specialists.
A t-test for gender differences in temporarily protected children indicated a significantly higher score for “4 personality growth” in girls than in boys. A t-test of the two groups of temporary caregivers in charge indicated a significantly higher score for “6 positive relationships with others” when the caregiver was in charge for more than 6 months The t-test for the gender differences in temporarily protected children indicated no significant difference across age groups and in relation to their enrollment period between the two groups of temporary caregivers.
