After independence in 1991, President Saparmurat Niyazov built a cult of personality and After Niyazov"s death, Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, who inherited power, created a cult of personality for himself. Basically Turkmenistan is not a communist country. Nevertheless, the cult of personality still exists. In addition, the cult of personality has been stable without any resistance from peoples and has been maintained to this day. Therefore, it is difficult to understand this situation of Turkmenistan. With this question, this paper is analyzed as follows.
First, previous studies related to this subject will be analyzed. In order to understand the cult of personality that exists in Turkmenistan, studies related to this topic and the history and political system of the country must be analyzed.
Second, the reasons for the emergence of personality cult will be analyzed. After historically analyzing the causes of personality cult in Turkmenistan, not in communist countries, this will be compared to the case of communist countries that promoted the cult of personality.
Third, the process in which the cult of personality was formed and promoted will be analyzed. After the formation and process of personality cult promoted by Niyazov and Berdymukhamedov has been analyzed, it will be compared to that of the communist countries that promoted the cult of personality.
Fourth, the reason why the cult of personality is maintained stably will be analyzed. After inheriting power, Berdymukhamedov virtually removed Niyazov"s personality cult and started a cult of personality for himself. Despite this situation the reason why there is virtually no resistance from peoples will be analyzed. In the existing communist state, the cult of personality has been maintained stably due to the justification of building a socialist state. Similarly, in Turkmenistan there would have been something that could replace it.
Fifth, based on the above analysis, the characteristics of Turkmenistan personality cult will be analyzed.
