So far, there have been some burgeoning empirical researches on the relationship between the use of non-regular workers and it’s effect on firm’s performance. However, few have examined the use and effect of non-regular workers in the context of safety management or safety performance of the organization. In these respects, this study is aimed to investigate empirically the relationships between the expansion of employment flexibility, represented as the ratio of non-regular workers in firm’s workforce and the decrease of full-time status of safety manager, and the safety and organizational performance of the firm. To test these relationships empirically, we collected 484 firm’s data by combining data from the Occupational Safety and Health Company Survey(2015), Small Business Status Information System(SMINFO), and the Electronic Disclosure System(DART) of the Financial Supervisory Service. The results of analysis indicated that the expansion of firm’s employment flexibility was negatively related to the employee safety behavior as an aspect of safety performance of the firm, and that employee safety behavior was positively related to the firm’s financial performance. In addition, we found that the employee safety behavior played a partial mediating role in the relationship between employment flexibility and financial performance of the firm. The implications and future research directions were then discussed.
