Earlier Christian response to Islam was essentially polemic and defensive. Christian workers from the West did not understand the local culture and people, delivering the Christian message to Muslims without contextualization methods such as the inference model in communication. As such, there is a need to change the manner of communication from a source-oriented to a person and context-oriented method in which communicators and recipients can truly understand.
This article examines effective communication with the Hui, a Muslim people group, who are resistant to the gospel, by employing two methodological perspectives: communication theories and the Hui in China.
This study strives to approach the human elements beneath the surface level of Islam. Understanding the Hui’s culture and people and meeting their felt needs in order to open the lines of communication are the appropriate methods for mission among the Hui in China.
