In this essay, the analysis of Lewis’s The Monk draws on important aspects of the feminist analysis of horror, in particular the ideas of Barbara Creed. Creed’s the Monstrous-Feminine: Film, Feminism, Psychoanalysis (1993), influenced by Julia Kristeva’s work on horror and abjection, offers an interesting exploration of horror cinema from a psychoanalytical perspective, with particular reference to the representation of the female and the abject. The Monk, one of the most daring, shocking and gothic of the 18th-century British Gothic novels, is linked to Creed’s and Kristeva’s theory through its abundance of abject imagery, and its construction of the maternal figure and the female sexuality as the monstrous feminine. The Monk is not just a sensational one, but a work with patriarchal consciousness/unconsciousness that makes the feminine abject. Disgusting, fearful, and abject are depicted primarily with regard to female characters. It gives fear and disgust toward women in various forms, such as the abject female body, ineffectual motherhood, femme fatale, (symbolic) vampire, and witch. The deep horror that the corpselike Beatrice and Agnes evoke in Raymond and Lorenzo is akin to the revulsion of Kristeva’s abjection. The Prioress’s corpse is the ultimate form of abjection, and the maggot-infested corpse of Agnes’s infant marks her own abjection. The danger of female power and unpredictability that unsettles the patriarchal order is personified through Matilda, the novel’s premier femme fatale.
