This paper discusses the annotations of Yeoja Sohak complied by Yi Hangeol in 1927.
In the Joseon Dynasty, Sohak was translated several times in order to educate women and children and its annotations have been studied to translate it accurately. Among various versions of Sohak translations, Sohak Eonhae(1694) [or Sohak Eonhae(1668)] has been adopted in Eoje Sohak Eonhae(1744) without modification and became the most influential edition. These translation built on the annotations of Yulgok Yiyi’s Sohak Jegajipju(1612).
Yeoja Sohak selected content pertaining to women from Sohak. While Yeoja Sohak is annotated and translated on the basis of Sohak Jegajipju and Eoje Sohak Eonhae, it differs from other translations in that it contains annotations from Ryu Huimun and Kim Ryung who belonged to Toegye school and those from Haksa Gangrok edited by Yi Byongho et al. In addition, the editor himself, Yi Hangeol, who was the successor to Toegye’s studies, added annotations citing Yegi, Euirye, etc. and translations based on them.
