Human computer interaction (HCI) tries to reduce the heterogeneity of the user"s digital environment and real world through a Tangible User Interface (TUI). Research using electromagnetic waves is important for the perception of risk and development of digital devices around us. Electromagnetic waves occur at the intersection of electric and magnetic fields or alternating current. Emissions are released by all appliances and phones, including TVs and refrigerators. Although exposure to electromagnetic (EM) waves over a prolonged period can cause problems such as cancer, sleep disorders, and brain dysfunction, their harmful effects are still being studied.
Electromagnetic sensors that detect electromagnetic waves connect physical and digital technologies through small devices. That is, through proximity or contact, the device detects the presence of a nearby field and displays the result. As a result of the interaction of short-range electromagnetic fields, researchers have developed a variety of design innovations. Technology can motivate design, and therefore this study began with technology as its starting point.
The purpose of this study is to extract the design principles of interaction by observing the user behavior of the prototype to which the sensor is applied. We investigated sensor design by observing how users interacted with sensors. We used the action research method during the design process. Therefore, this paper implements the user"s experience and response through user observation.
The findings and content are as follows. First, the study identifies design elements relevant for design interaction. Second, the findings of the study looked at various aspects of users’ behavior when interacting with prototypes, including electromagnetic sensors. Third, based on observations, elements of physical, cognitive, system, content, and interaction were identified. We suggest a design combined with a sensor that considers a user"s behavior and types of interaction. Based on these findings, the following is expected.
The study is designed to make a constructive contribution to convergence design research by allowing designers who are unfamiliar with real-world prototypes to access and understand the technology convergence with sensors that are difficult to use and suggest principles for interaction design. As research shows that limited technology and sensors will limit the technical knowledge of the future, the results of this study may be potentially used in future interactive products. The detailed designs used can be utilized as the basis for providing guidance in interactive design. The researcher hopes that this study may contribute to the design and development of sensor technology in the future. In addition, user observation is not only a tool that uses the sensor of the electromagnetic field to read data but also a way for the designer to understand the environmental context in a new way.
