The purpose of this study is twofold. The first objective is the identification of the original form of the white porcelain rectangular bottles that began to emerge in the late Joseon period, particularly in relation to similar bottles produced in China and Japan at that time. The second is the determination of the significance and meaning of these white porcelain rectangular bottles based on an analysis of their shapes and decorations.
A typical white porcelain rectangular bottle under the aforementioned analysis has a square or rectangular shape with angled shoulders, and a comparatively narrower mouth and a flat bottom attached to the rectangular body. This rectangular bottle appeared after the 18th century which had not been produced before.
However, information about white porcelain rectangular bottles has not yet been discovered regarding background of its appearance, period of production, its technique, place of manufacture, and the user. Rather, it has been dealt indirectly which was only included as a part of angular bottle studies in the broader range or a chapter of pattern studies. Especially, studies of its production period or method is in confusion, that every holding institution has different opinions.
Since white porcelain rectangular bottle has a fastidious procedure of its manufacture, there is not much relics remain. Although, pure kaolin was used and its pattern was drawn delicately, which indicates it intended to pursue a good quality. These bottles have been excavated around Gyeonghuigung Palace and some of the remains has inscriptions on the bottom which represents it was used for the royal family or correspondingly considered as a valuable collection. Moreover, it has various style, composition, and types of patterns, that enables to comprehend aspects of transition in late Joseon dynasty.
Therefore, this thesis will examine blue and white porcelain fever over Europe and production conditions of white rectangular porcelain in China and Japan and understand the origin of its production. Further, appearance of white rectangular bottle in Joseon will also be studied together with its foreign element and feature of its modeling.
