“Hatsusaburo style bird"s-eye view maps” devised by Hatsusaburo Yoshida (1884~1955) was a new artistic genre in which a vast area is represented on a single space by combining the tradition of East Asian landscape painting with the modern concept of an extremely wide angle like that of modern panoramas and fisheye lens. Yoshida was able to capture an expansive area on a single limited space and provide detailed information of a given area"s transportation network comprising roads, railroads and sea routes. The possibility of transformation and distortion during the process of making a bird"s-eye view map led him to revise his subjects freely according to the purpose and usage of the map. His activities as a cartographer were closely related to Japanese society, which was undergoing a rapid change into a modern state, as well as government policies oriented towards Japan"s imperialist expansion. His maps, from the first one in 1913 to those made in the late 1930s until the government"s ban of the bird"s-eye view maps, ran on the same track with the government of Imperial Japan in its modern history marked by its expansion of colonies, imperialist wars, construction of railroads and the development of tourism. The production of the bird"s-eye view maps of Joseon in 1929 was also closely related to such tendencies. With the Joseon Expo planned to be held in 1929 nearing, the Japanese capitalists in Korea along with the Japanese colonial authority then ruling Korea, wanted their colony to be known across the international community as a maker of various modern commodities and an attractive tourist destination. It was to meet their orders that Yoshida diligently created the bird"s-eye view maps providing detailed information of various regions of Korea. These maps of his were accessible among the general public via large prints displayed at the venues of the Joseon Expo and smaller copies printed on various commercial leaflets distributed to the public.
