Mobile remote presence (MRP) systems allow physically remote people to interact and communicate as if they were in the same place. Since MRP systems function as embodied proxy agents, they are increasingly used in medical settings. Institutionalized elderly individuals usually have a mild cognitive impairment, which decreases their ability to communicate with people and will to live lively. We assumed that communicating via MRP systems would improve their quality of communication presence, perceived presence and life satisfaction. To test this assumption, we conducted two studies: 1) In Study1, we have compared the quality of communication in three communication conditions(telephone, video call, MRP system). 2) In Study2, we have investigated the perceived presence and life satisfaction through four tasks interacting with MRP systems for two weeks. Our results show that the quality of communication is the best in the MRP condition. Also, interacting with MRP systems has been shown to enhance perceived presence of the nurses. However, it was difficult to confirm the improvement of life satisfaction during the three week study period. Our findings highlight the possibility of adopting MRP systems for institutionalized elderly in rapidly aging society.
