This paper examined the special exhibitions of 2019 commemorating the 100th anniversary of the March 1st Movement and the establishment of the Korean Provisional government. The study identified a list of popular exhibits, such as photographic or painted portraits, theTaegukg i(the flag of South Korea), and the Declaration of Independence, as well as new materials that were released to the public for the first time. The study was critical of the typical aspects of the exhibitions: homogeneous and consistent national narratives; content centered around elite personalities; a Seoul-based perspective; the belief that unifies the consciousness of the general public and the elites; and, regional differences that are only revealed through differences between people. However, there were a small number of exhibitions that offered the public notions for reflections. The topics included the territorial expansion of the Independence Movement, and the difficulty in reconstructing the role of women who were active in the Movement, and the points of diversion or diversity regarding the collective memory of the Movement. The special exhibition held at the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History was an example that included both critical and reflective aspects.
