None of the previous studies on ｢Mirror｣ by Lee, Sang used a cognitive perspective. The researcher considered that it is now time to conduct research from a cognitive point of view to meet the status of representative poem of a poet who represent self-awareness. Therefore, this study intends to consider the cognitive system by analyzing based on cognitive poetics and applying Greimas’ semiotic square model. This will be a new method of analyzing unique cognitive structure of texts that show surrealistic characteristics through the process of analyzing cognitive structure of text and moving toward cognitive orientation.
The ‘mirror’ represented in text is a psychological reflection and realistic self is reflecting the self in the mirror. ‘Mirror’ is the ground and ‘myself’ represented in the mirror is constructing a cognitive system for self-awareness by functioning as a surrealistic figure. The text is showing cognitive structure of binary oppositions of realistic self and the self in the mirror. It is showing hybrid cognitive orientation that tends to reach understanding and unity of true self based on cognitive structure. Narrator in the text recognizes ‘self’ in the mirror with binary oppositive view, but is showing cognitive orientation that recognizes a relationship with ‘myself’ in the mirror and pursues interest and unity.
Inside and outside the ‘mirror’ that this study consider as psychological reflection can be considered the same as the structure of inside and outside of Möbius strip connected as one. It is the attention of inside and outside of mirror being the same but appear differently. It is the attention that direction of shapes reflected on ‘mirror,’ a reflective object, are different but the essence is the same. It implies a philosophical meaning that the essence of inside human existence is the same unlike what is shown on the outside.

이상 「거울」에 관한 기존 연구들 가운데 인지적 관점을 활용한 연구는 없었다. 이제 자아 인식을 표상하는 시인의 대표적인 시의 위상에 맞게 인지적 관점에서의 연구를 시도할 때가 됐다고 본다. 이에 이 연구는 인지시학을 바탕으로 하고 그레마스 사각기호를 적용하는 방법으로 텍스트를 분석하여 그 인지체계를 고찰하고자 한다. 이러한 작업은 텍스트의 인지구조를 분석하고 인지지향으로 나아가는 과정을 통해 초현실적인 특성을 보이는 텍스트의 독특한 인지체계를 도출하는 새로운 방법이 될 것이다.
텍스트에 표상된 ‘거울’은 심리적 반영물로서 현실적 자아가 거울 속의 자아를 비추어주고 있다. ‘거울’은 배경이며 거울에 표상되는 거울 속의 ‘나’는 초현실적 전경으로 기능하여 자아인식을 위한 인지체계를 구축해 나가고 있다. 텍스트는 현실적 자아와 거울 속 자아로 이항 대립되는 인지구조를 보인다. 이러한 인지구조를 기저로 참자아의 이해와 합일에 이르려는 혼성적 인지지향을 드러내고 있다. 텍스트는 이항 대립적으로 화자가 거울 속의 ‘나’를 인지하지만 결국 거울 속의 ‘나’와의 관계를 인지하며 이해와 합일을 추구하는 인지지향을 보이고 있다.
이 연구에서 심리적 반영물로 보고 있는 ‘거울’의 속과 바깥은 뫼비우스띠의 속과 겉이 하나로 연결된 구조와 같다고 할 수 있다. 거울의 속과 바깥이 서로 같으면서도 다르게 보인다는 원리가 적용된 것이다. 거울이라는 반사 물체에 비치는 형상은 방향이 다르면서도 그 본질은 같은 것이라는 원리이다. 인간 존재의 본질은 겉으로 보여지는 부분과 달리 그 이면의 본질이 같다는 철학적 의미를 함축하고 있다.
