The mandative subjunctive constructions in the Present-Day English seem to be moribund and not as productive as the times prior to Early Modern English. Yet, the recent corpus-based research by many scholars show that American English and British English, respectively, develop their own mandative constructions. This paper, based on some very distinctive morph-syntactic and distributional properties of English subjunctives, provides an analysis of the architectural configuration of the construction, mostly with the feature representing non-factive, ie., [±irrealis]. It is proposed that there be a functional layer sitting in between TP and CP, SubjuctP, and that the feature of [+irrealis], as opposed to [+factivity], percolates up to the subjunctive CP, which makes it a category of distinctive properties. By positing SubjuntP, it becomes easier to account for some intriguing properties such as coordinating Subjuntive clauses, pseudogapping, the unavailability of ‘factive verbs’ in the subjunctive complementation. In this paper, it has been implicated that the mandative subjunctive CP is a defective category due to the relation between licensing X(P) and the subordinate CP via defective T-head.
