Universality is the main theme of Aristotle"s Poetics. According to him, the universal exists only as an idea or a name. In contrast, essence is based on the universality of the individual and this universality is already immanent in individuality. Thus tragedy should be an imitation of universal behavior, not individual behavior. At this moment, the audience can experience catharsis and ultimately feel pleasure. To maximize pleasure, how can we find the universal in tragedy? First, it is through the plot. Second, it is through the universality of the character. Third, it is through the universality of events. The audience experiences empathy and catharsis when individual events connote archetype and universality as the play progresses.
