This study systematically examines the academic position of 19th-century Kiho scholar Ki Jeongjin(pen name: Nosa, 1798~1879) on the Horak Debate. One of the six major neo-Confucian scholars in Korea, Ki devoted profound academic attention to the Horak Debate from his mid-forties until his death. He attempted to resolve the problems of the debate that were primarily caused by the successors of the Ho-ron(Chungcheong Theory) and Nak-ron(Seoul Theory) scholars, and aimed to establish the theoretical foundation of reality correspondence measures. In order to investigate Ki’s discussion of human nature and the nature of things, this study reviews the works of the Kiho School of the 19th century with a focus on the problems of the Horak Debate, which emerged with the successors of the Ho-ron and Nak-ron scholars. This paper also explores the efforts of numerous scholars to overcome those problems. It determines that Ki’s discussion of human nature and the nature of things was a part of a conscious effort to recover the original characteristics of the doctrines of Chu-tzu. Through a systematic analysis of Ki’s discussion of human nature and the nature of things, which was developed based on the characteristic understanding of li(理: principle)-centered liyifenshu(理一分殊), this paper confirms that the discussion was about the integration of li(理) and fen(分). In addition, Ki’s criticism of the Ho-ron and Nak-ron’s discussions of human nature and the nature of things is also summarized and analyzed. Through an exploration of Ki’s discussion of human nature and the nature of things, it is concluded that Ki’s contributions were significant in that they explored the original academic characteristics of the doctrines of Chu-tzu from a new angle and added to academic efforts to sublate confrontation and conflict in the Kiho School. It is also determined that Ki’s discussion established a theoretical system that was able to overcome the difficulties of the times by strengthening the neo-Confucian critical mind.
