Purpose: The purpose of this study is to understand the meaning and essence of the first clinical experience of nursing students and to understand the process of adaptation. Methods: This study is a qualitative study applying Cloaizzi 's phenomenological research method to understand and describe the meaning and essence of the first clinical practice experience of nursing college students. The study was conducted on 30 students who were practicing in the 3rd grade nursing college students at a university in U city. Results: As a result of this study, the clinical practice adaptation process experienced by nursing students was derived from 4 categories and 11 sub-categories. The four categories are: 1) vague fear about clinical practice, 2) experience of various clinical situations, 3) extension of knowledge through clinical practice and 4) understanding the meaning of nursing Conclusions: Therefore, nursing students started with fear in clinical practice, but they gradually find their meaning by adapting to clinical practice. A variety of successful adaptation programs and strategies should be developed for mentoring and counseling in order for clinical training to be effective for nursing college students.
