The fringe tree, Chionanthus retusus (Oleaceae) has been used as a natural remedy that helps a paralytic stroke, dementia, phlegm and malaria. This study was conducted to investigate the antioxidant and anti-aging activities of C. retusus flower as a cosmeceuticals and nutricosmetics, viz. FEE: 70% ethanol extract, FWE: water extract and FHWE: hot water extract. The highest content of total flavonoid compounds was 36.02 mg/g in FEE. The content of total polyphenol compounds was the highest by 56.25 mg/g in FHWE. The FHWE showed the highest SODlike activity (53.24%), ABTS radical scavenging (99.95%) and DPPH radical scavenging (94.02%) at 2,000 μg/mL concentration. In the analysis of anti-aging effect at 2,000 μg/mL, collagenase inhibition activity showed the highest effects of 60.53% in FHWE, 766.72 μg/mL for IC50. The elastase inhibition activity was highest of 72.04% in FEE and 641.14 μg/mL for IC50, which was higher than ursolic acid. Tyrosinase inhibition activity for whitening effect was the highest of 28.85% in FHWE at 2,000 μg/mL. These results indicated that the hot water extracts from C. retusus flower (FHWE) useful for extracting at high temperature as a water-soluble solvent because it shows useful antioxidant and anti-wrinkle activity. Therefore, C. retusus flower is believed to be a natural resource that can be used as a functional materials.
