Although “閒談消夏錄(xiantanxiaoxialu)” was considered as a collection of Korean classical novels owing to the manuscript in Korean entitled “消夏錄(xiaoxialu)”, “閒談消夏錄(xiantanxiaoxialu)” was originally made by binding several copies into twelve volumes: 160 books in “遯窟讕言(dunkulanyan)” written by 王韜(wangtao) and 210 books in 埋憂集(maiyouji) written by 朱翊淸(zhuyiqing) in 翠筠山房(cuiyunshanfang), China, at 1878 (道光 4年). At the time of publication, 30 books were deleted from “遯窟讕言(dunkulanyan)” (160 books) and all books of “埋憂集(maiyouji)” were used. At the same time, the titles of four books were slightly modified and four new books were added. As a result, a total of 344 books were organized and compiled. The “閒談消夏錄(xiantanxiaoxialu)”, which is a collection of novels and consists of twelve chapters and twelve volumes, was imported into Korea and has been stored in Kyujanggak.** The original version was translated into Korean. The translation was transcribed and passed on.
Considering that “共十六” is written on the cover of the Korean manuscript “閒談消夏錄(xiantanxiaoxialu)”, which was translated and has been descended, it is believed that it was composed of ‘16 chapters’, unlike the Chinese version composed of ‘卷十二’, and the entire volumes were already translated at that time. Since the entire volumes were translated, it was possible to mark on the covers of volumes like ‘共十六卷之一’ and ‘共十六卷之二’. This study read 30 books of the existing ‘閒談消夏錄 (volume 1 and 2)’ and divided the contents into ‘志人(zhiren)’ and ‘志怪(zhiguai)’ type (11 books), chivalry(俠義) and public safety(公案) type (2 books), affection(愛情) and compassion(人情) (5 books), history and hero type (2 books), and Buddhism and Taoism type (5 books).
The translation can be classified into literal translation, liberal translation, digest(縮約), additive translation(添譯), and amplification(敷衍). Particularly, the parts using additive translation were translated by amplifying the meaning. For example, it derived characters from a word in the original text, created a story from the original text, and completed a sentence by quoting “周易 (zhouyi)”. The pattern strongly implied that a knowledgeable and educated person translated and transcribed it.
