his article aims to review the translation difference between Beonyeoksohak and Sohakeonhae, which show distinctive features of liberal vs. literal translation styles out of the 16th century literature in Korea. In this paper, based on the translation of Sohakeonhae, the translations of the Chinese words or phrases in the original text are compared from the perspectives of liberal and literal styles, after divided categories such as nouns. These two writings carry the translation of the same original Chinese text. Beonyeoksohak has a tendency of liberal translation style and some Chinese characters are not translated to make the sentences natural. On the contrast, in Sohakeonhae, every single Chinese character is translated. As a result, Beonyeoksohak is easier to understand as its translation is smooth and closer to the spoken Korean language, while in Sohakeonhae, the translated sentences are not natural and thus, make it difficult to understand them.
