This article comprehensively reviews the achievements of German history research conducted from 2017 to 2018 in South Korea, outlining the characteristic trends as well as forecasting the future path of the development of Korea’s German history research project. First, the practical demand, which arose from having a critical mindset regarding the contemporary history of the Korean peninsula, is still a valuable motivation for conducting German history research in Korea. However, there have been changes in terms of the research subject and methodology. These were especially pronounced by the heightened interest shown in public history and transnational relations. Second, historical research in Europe and the United States were reflected in the interests of researchers, which have expanded to various fields including the spatial turn in history, history of science, historical study on European racism, history of emotion, and so on. Finally, the focus on contemporary history is a significant characteristic of German history research in Korea. Specifically, behind the growing interest in public history, there exists a rapidly growing popular culture about history that exists outside of academic circles. This is because contemporary history, as the “hermeneutics of the present,” is the fighting arena of historical interpretation.
