The purpose of this study is to examine the co-occurrence according to the polarity of the word, based on the relationship between ‘는’ and ‘도’. In particular, the study notes the semantic relationship between ‘는’ and ‘도’, called ‘distinction’ and ‘identity’. Depending on the polarity of adverbs and their respective semantics, there are different aspects that co-occur with positive and negative statements. In addition, the study even partially explains the historical process of this semantic relationship.
If a positive polar adverb is combined with ‘는’, the meaning of negativity that deviates from expectation is matched first with a negative statement. Even when it matches the positive statement, it also conveys a negative tone. If a positive polar adverb is combined with ‘도’, the meaning of positivity that strengthens its positivity is matched with a positive statement. When matched with a negative sentence, it is apparent that it implies falling short of general expectations.
If a negative polar adverb is combined with ‘는’, the meaning of positivity that deviates from expectation is matched first with a positive statement. When it matches the negative statement, it expresses the distinct meaning of the negative. If a negative polar adverb is combined with ‘도’, the meaning that strengthens its negativity is matched with a negative statement. If it matches the positive statement, the meaning of negativity is expressed as it is.
