The purpose of this study is to show how the new revelation dispute in the second century B. C. influenced the formation of the Book of Daniel, and to examine the understanding of the dream and the vision used as the instrument of revelation in the formation of the Book of Daniel.
The Israelite community in the second century B. C. needed a new revelation about eschatology to protect its faith under the severe persecution of Antiochus IV. The contemporary apocalyptical form to contain the new revelation is vision - throne vision - vision interpretation. Under the struggle between the Deuteronomistic demand not to add or subtract to the contents of the Torah and the new revelation, the Book of Daniel was formulated in the following stages: (1) The new revelation is received through the instrument of dream and vision; (2) Daniel is qualified to receive the new revelation through dreams and visions, since his faithfulness to the Torah is proved in Daniel 1-6; (3) Daniel 10-12 transformed visions into words according to the prophetic tradition; (4) furthermore, Daniel 9 subjected a vision about eschatology to Jeremiah’s words, 70 exilic years. Now the 70 years were interpreted through an angel as 70 weeks.
In sum, the book of Daniel presented the revelation about eschatology based on the Deuteronomistic theology by transforming the apocalyptic genre. The meaning that the formation of the Book of Daniel gives to later communities, is not only receiving the new revelation through dreams and visions, but also blocking new revelations by subjugating them to the Word. On the one hand, the demand not to add or subtract new revelations formulated the identity of Judaism. On the other hand, the book of Daniel made possible the emergence of the Christianity by showing the possibility of a new revelation through dreams and visions.
