This study aims to present a new theoretical subject & curriculum on art theory education using English Medium Instruction(EMI). Nowadays English is the most powerful language among languages. English is not merely an American language, but a global language. The status of English as lingua franca in international communication has led nations to search for effective English Medium Instruction. EMI is being introduced in many non-English speaking countries as a way of improving student's English ability. Despite of the popularity of EMI, little attention has been paid to evaluate the effectiveness of EMI. This study explores this issues focused on the case study of college of art & design in university. A survey questionnaire was conducted by 115 students who took EMI courses(History of Modern Art) in the fall of 2008 and 298 student who took EMI(Understanding of Plastic Arts) in the spring of 2009. The survey results are as follows: 1) Both English and Korean were used in EMI courses for lecture, discussion and presentation. 2) Students were not quickly provided with feedback on grammatical or pronunciational mistakes by instructors. 3) An important co-relation was found between the students' english ability and the effectiveness of EMI. 4) Low level of English learners pointed out that they needed English helper. This study indicates that successful EMI depends on students' English ability and instructors educational training. Therefore, in the point of EMI, theoretical subject educations of History of Modern Art & Understanding of Plastic Arts are very important to improve the students' ability to develop creative thinking, human nature and well-organized training system of arts. However, colleges of art & design in Korea are relatively lack of studies on EMI and theoretical educational system. So, it is necessary to study on theoretical education system & curriculum of History of Modern Art & Understanding of Plastic Arts in point of EMI approach. Through this study, those of the followings are analysed in details: 1) the necessity of EMI in theoretical arts education, 2) the study of education model based on EMI, 3) improvement & practical application for EMI in art theory education. It is expected that this study can be actively utilized to make plans to give in art theory education and to develop educational system and structure of college of arts.
