The purpose of this study was to perform a historical and sociological analysis of the creation and change of aesthetic sense, and the relation of the mental structure of human behaviors expressed in the Cheoyong dance in the process of civilization. In this study, based on Elias's theological basis(1939, 19789, 1982) and Dunning, Sheard's analysis framework(1997), a historical and sociological analysis method and a comparative analysis method were employed, and data on changes in court dance and Cheoyong dance were collected, analyzed and then interpreted. Through such processes the followings results were obtained. First, as for mental structure shown in Cheoyong dance, the sense of mental unity of ritualized, legalized court ceremonies became criteria for aesthetic judgment, and the ceremonies and etiquettes became norms of behaviors, and such internalized behavior patterns became a basis for the creation of aesthetic sense. Therefore, Cheoyong dance which had been created as a shamanistic activity established a close relationship with social structure to become figuration called court dance, and aesthetic sense was created in the mental structure aimed at protecting royal authority as a sort of behavior pattern that corresponds to power structure. The aesthetic sense of Cheoyong dance achieved historical and sociological development called simplification, professionalization, and universalism in the relation of mental structure as a peculiar figuration of human behaviors. Second, changes in the aesthetic sense of Cheoyong dance corresponds to Elias' civilization process (1939, 1979, 1982) as a long term change process in which simplified aesthetic sense is gradually equipped with internalized self control and then developed into universalized aesthetic sense of traditional art through sophisticated professionalization in the characteristics of personal exclusiveness, conflict․mutual dependence, public exclusiveness displayed in Dunning, Sheard(1997)'s analysis.
