The aim of this thesis is to explore the phases of distortion of Korean traditional dances and analyze its causality. In the period of Japanese colonialization, Korean traditional dances had not been subjectively changed and not been independently modernized. On the contrary, it had been changed by compulsion. Therefore to search for the causality of phases of Korean traditional dances, we should find how it had been changed during the period of Japanese colonialization and make it clear where the main reasons were placed. In this thesis, the main reasons of change are divided threefold: institutional change, personal and mental change, and physical change resulted by Japanese colonial policies. First of all, in chapter II the phases of institutional change resulted by Japanese colonial policies has been examined. Dissolution of "Jang-Ak-Won" which amounts to bureaucracy of traditional music and arts, reduction of it to "Lee-Woang-Gik A- Ak-Bu", the change of educational system of dances, and establishment of state-regulated prostitution will be described and explained. Secondly, in chapter III personal and mental change has been explored. The vanishment of state-regulated Kisaeng after the dissolution of "Jan-Ak-Won", disappearing of the distinction between the first rate Kisaeing and the third rate Kisaeing, and entering the stage of people studying abroad meant the change of subject of performance of traditional dances. Audience also had been changed from the King and his relatives to general audience who should pay for the performance. Thirdly, in chapter IV physical change has been studied. It means the change of the performing space. This spatial change had been followed by the change of the space and time of dances, movement of dancse, the rhythm of dances, and modes of choreography or processing of dances.
