Poongmi is the first ginger variety developed by pure line selection from 54 Korean local accessions. The selected pure line having high quality and high yielding was tested for regional adaptation, and it was superior to those traditional accessions in growth characteristics, quality, and yield performance. This one was released to farmers from the National Honam Agricultural Experiment Station (NHAES), RDA in 2001. The variety “Poongmi” has a short stature, low tillering, thick stem, low sprout number, and also has an ideal type of tuber stem which is a stick type, favorable to consumers, compared with the local varieties with horseshoe-type stem. This variety showed comparatively resistance to beat army worm and rhizome rot. Total gingerol component in this variety was 25.68 mg/g, which was two times higher than the local varieties. Yield performance of this variety was about 16.8 ton per hectare which is comparable to 51% yield advantage compared to “Bongdong Jaerae”. It is important to preserve the soil moisture from seeding to emergence and to avoid continuous cropping when growing this cultivar. This variety is adaptable to southern plain and semi-alpine area in Korea.
