Kı¯lauea, Hawaii is an active volcano, where thousands of earthquakes occur every year. Earthquakes on Kı¯lauea are dominated by volcanic earthquakes, and their magnitudes are typically smaller than tectonic earthquakes. Volcanic earthquakes are also differentiated from tectonic earthquakes by their shallower hypocenters. This study analyzed the frequency and magnitude of a time-series of earthquake records (2000-2008) collected from shallow and deep layers. The mean magnitudes of shallow and deep earthquakes were M2.31±0.02 and M2.81±0.03. The frequencies of the two different types of earthquakes were not temporally correlated to each other, but their mean magnitude was higher in a layer, where an earthquake frequency was higher than other layers. For shallow earthquakes, their mean magnitude and frequency increased until 4km deep and decreased in deeper layers. The frequency and magnitude of deep earthquakes decreased with increasing depth until 30km deep. Thermal anomalies computed by removing seasonally repeating temperature signals from the raw land surface temperature (LST) were compared with the 95th percentile earthquakes. Occurrences of these earthquakes did not correspond to the peaks of the thermal anomalies but fell on the increasing or decreasing phases of the LST signals. Therefore, thermal anomalies may be potentially used as additional information in investigating the existence of volcano-earthquake or earthquake-volcano sequences in Hawaii.
