This study attempts to overcome the Northeast Asia-centric perspective on East Asia by elucidating essential linkages between Northeast and Southeast Asia in the formation, operation and dissolution of regional orders. The regional order of East Asia from the second half of the 19th Century to the first half of the 20th Century can be characterized by a colonial order based on the West-centric Concert of Empires. The juxtaposition of internal and external factors in the formation and dissolution of the colonial order in East Asia demonstrated dynamic interaction between Northeast and Southeast Asia. In the geographic structure of the Southeast Asian archipelago, the Southeast Asian peninsula and the Northeast Asian continent, on one hand, and in the functional structure of political-military, social-economic and cultural-ideological dimensions, on the other, the colonial order witnessed organic interdependence between Northeast and Southeast Asia. In this context the prevailing Korean perspective focused on Northeast Asia in studying the historical regional orders of East Asia should be deemed excessively ethnocentric.
