In this article, I analyse Mary Yellan, the heroine of Jamaica Inn as a young woman going through what Simone Vierne called “rites of passage.” 1) Preparation for Mary’s first rite of passage was begun with the death of her mother, and her going to Jamaica Inn, where her maternal aunt, Patience lived with her husband, Joss Merlyn. 2) Death in the rites of passage: Mary Yellan suffered trials that essentially changed her. Under the care of Joss Merlyn, she suffered verbal, physical, and sexual oppression, and witnessed a number of criminal acts, such as smuggling, murder, and the plunder of a wrecked ship. When she went to report these crimes to Reverend Francis Davey, the vicar of the neighboring town, he held her hostage. It can be said that the original Mary Yellan suffered death in order for her new self to be born. 3) A New Birth: Mary Yellan came back to life after she won the fight against her uncle and the Reverend. If a rite of passage only occurs after “a change of existential position” and a rebirth as “a new person,” Mary Yellan completed her rite of passage. This rite of passage is very pioneering as her marriage will provide her a more equal relationship than her aunt had. However, her adventures are distinguished from the rite of passage of a male who becomes either a king or a hero after his heroic adventure in that her marriage will suspend her growth.
