In this article, I analyse Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Tim Burton’s fantasy film <Alice in Wonderland> as “rites of passage.” Tim Burton changes the episodic narrative of the original text into an epic quest narrative in his film by giving Alice a rite of passage (an initiation ceremony). He depicts her as a nineteen-year-old woman-warrior (from the seven-year-old child in Carroll’s book) and merges Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. In my essay, I compare and contrast the original text and the fantasy film and identify five stages of Alice’s rite of passage. Alice grows up remarkably after her quest in a fantasy world in this film, though Alice’s change is not clear in the text. 1) Alice receives the proposal of Hamish Ascott, whom she does not like, at a garden party; 2) she visits Underland in order to escape from having to accept this proposal; 3) she receives her mission as a knight and warrior in the Underworld, where there is the Red Queen, a crisis of beheading, and a forest leading to the country of the White Queen; 4) she kills the Jabberwocky in a quarrel with the Red Queen by using the power of imagination as her father had often encouraged her; and 5) she restores order to red-rose country and returns to reality as a heroine. Afterwards, she declines Hamish’s marriage proposal and leaves for China. Thus Tim Burton emphasizes Alice’s growth through a rite of passage: her quest in a fantasy world.
