This paper aims to explore how women’s sexuality is presented in different historical and patriarchal contexts of several short stories in Alice Munro’s Runaway. Carla, Juliet, and Sara, female characters from the stories under consideration are represented as having different levels of sexual consciousness. They are also situated in different historical contexts. Munro demonstrates in these stories that these female characters are suffering in the oppressive communities in which they are trapped. The communities represented by Munro are as claustrophobic as those in a colonial state, where women’s bodies and minds, including desire, love, and sexuality, have been suppressed by a dominant power. What enables Carla and Juliet to escape from the patriarchal and narrow-minded community is the consciousness of their own respective sexualities. As Anthony Giddens argues that romantic love subordinates women to their lovers, Carla is again trapped in a patriarchal system due to her dependence on her husband. Unlike Carla, Juliet makes ‘confluent love’ with her lover by running away from her hometown, which Giddens proposes as a new type of alternative love that replaces romantic love. Munro seems to be making the point that women’s freedom and happiness do not entirely depend on their sexual consciousness even though it is essential for female subjectivity. Munro considers female sexual subjectivity as not existing as its own separate matter, but as a contextual problem embedded in the social and historical context.
