Jina KimThe early decades of the nineteenth century witnessed the emergence of new genres such as local color fiction and national tales that cultivated cultural nationalism by presenting the customs, dialects and oral traditions of a specific region as well as by redefining and constructing national character. This phenomenon of literary nationalism is, although seemingly opposed to the eighteenth century cosmopolitanism, in fact, deeply imbedded in the complex international relationship. Especially, the novels by major Scottish and Irish writers of this period explored the colonial relationship with England through the cross-cultural marriage plot. Sydney Owenson(later Lady Morgan)'s enormously popular novel, The Wild Irish Girl, also revolves around the courtship of an English hero and a native Irish noble woman. Aiming at English readers, this novel tries to show Ireland and its traditional culture in a positive light and attempts the fictional reconciliation between Ireland and England through the marriage. Owenson also attempts to redefine the image of Ireland through the image of the beautiful and intelligent Glorvina, the princess of Inismore, who embodies the Celtic cultural tradition and the simple natural virtues as well as profound scholastic knowledge and refined manners. This paper discusses the ways in which the national marriage plot transforms cultural differences and political antagonisms between English and Irish into harmony and reconciliation. It also shows the hidden violence and inequality beneath the novel's apparent happy-ending and the equal partnership.
