Subject inversion has been argued to correlate with another property, i.e. pro-drop. The availability of such properties on INFL was argued to license the expletive pro, which is assumed to occupy the preverbal subject position in inversion constructions. Subject inversion in Italian has been claimed to be free. From an interpretive point of view, subject inversion in Italian may be free from syntactic constraints, but appears to be subject to factors of a pragmatic nature. In this article, We propose a typology of subjects in Italian in terms of focus structure. We try to explicate the diverse behavior of Italian subjects. For this purpose, we classify subjects into 4 types according to their distributional behavior, and we describe their pragmatic functions; this pragmatic analysis gives a good account of why the 4 types of subjects show different distributions in different sentence constructions.
