The Purpose of this paper is to investigate the images and roles of women in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. The male persona, Stephen Dedalus in the work, sees women as ambivalent beings. Most of women in Joyce's works such as Chamber Music, Giacomo Joyce, Stephen Hero, and Ulysses are also represented as ambivalent beings. The same women who receive the fragrant homage due to holiness also change to prostitutes who inspire burning sexual desire in the work. There are some close relationships between A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and his other works in the sense that the images of women are ambivalent ones. I insist that the male personae in the works should be in the grip of confused identities, however. The male personae are all inspired spiritually and supported physically by the women whom they regard as ambivalent beings in their own view. Stephen Dedalus in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man nevertheless relies on the women's service for physical nurturance and psychological support. The roles of women, therefore, are intrinsically of vital importance in helping him to be “a growing up artist".
