The "Calypso" episode of Ulysses finds the arrival of a new character, Mr Bloom, with different tonal textures from previous successive episodes. Different features and personalities from those in Stephen's episodes highlight Joyce's actual restarting of the novel. As a result, numerous critical foci have been attracted on the character analysis of Mr Bloom and its narratological devices. However, this thesis suggests that throughout the episode Joyce demonstrates how to write history. In the person of Mr Bloom the historiography is materialized by his acts of rereading, explaining and imagining as historians do. When he is given information, such as in the form of an advertising bill, letters, and story, he reads the information again with gradually increased accuracy, explains it in terms of his experience, and uses his imagination to better understand what it really means. Such behavioral procedures indicate on the basis of document examinations how their explanations and imaginative understanding constitute history. It is through such writing of history that his-story reveals its substantive meanings. In the process, history can be referred to as "unformulated signified," for his life is portrayed as an amalgam of his past experiences and present condition no less than history is considered as an unending dialogue between the present and the past.
