Joyce's references to homosexual incidents in his work cannot be regarded as a sign of his benign reception of it as a minority discourse. I argue that the frequent references to homosexuality in Joyce's work reveal not only his critique of the legitimate dominance of heterosexuality, but also could be implicitly related to his critique of imperialist ideology. He once remarked that he had better dedicate his story, “An Encounter,” to George Meredith, whose royalist ideas, Joyce thinks, may have been constructed in the English educational system. From the trials of Oscar Wilde, he must have been aware of the homosexual practices among English elite and noble societies. Even the first story of Dubliners, “The Sisters,” indicates an implicit negotiation with homosexual practices, e.g. pedophilia. Old Cotter suggests a possibility of the unutterable relationship between the priest and the boy narrator. Joyce implies that the celibacy of priesthood is vulnerable to possibility of pedophilia. In addition, Joyce goes on to emphasize the implicit relationship between imperialist ideology and the English educational system. In “An Encounter,” an old queer josser encourages two boys to confess if they have sweethearts. But his abruptly changed attitudes reveals the imperialist ideology that focuses on the exclusion of females in the minds of boys in the school, thus making it possible for school boys to focus their attention only on sports and work. This ideological dictate was inculcated into the minds of school boys through popular magazines supporting the imperialist ideology. But this imperative produced a cult of homosexuality among the English elites. Too much emphasis on masculinity produces a distortion of sexual desire into homoeroticism or homosexuality.
