This study focuses on the phenomenon of conventional indirectness in requests of Russian. Requests threaten the hearer's negative face, and tact is required to ritually and symbolically demonstrate indirectness or politeness for smooth social interaction. Requesting behaviors involve the strategies, which exhibit conventionalization in both the choice of semantic devices and the actual forms. In many languages, conventional indirect requests, which mostly take the form of questions about felicity conditions of the requests, are the most important modes of expressing polite requests. Russian has several types of conventionalized request-questions. More conventionalized models are sentences concerning H's ability to do X, sentences concerning H doing X and sentences concerning H's desire or willingness to do X. They cannot be combined with lexical polite marker 'пожалуйста‘ and they are obligatory negated. Negation functions as an illocutionary marker of requests. The restrictions on the use of request-questions are linked with the marginal usage of indirect requests in Russian. This is at least partly due to an expansion of typical features of West European language. Russian is in an intermediate position on a scale of conventionalization, and represent a earlier stage of evolution, that is going on.
