This study aims to investigate Korean English learners’ speech act of request, specifically focusing on the preference of strategy use and request speech formation. 89 college students participated in the study and completed two multiple choice formated DCTs. The results indicate that participants preferred to use ‘query preparatory’ (as request strategy) and ‘external modification’+‘internal modification’+‘head act’ (as request speech formation), although the preference possibly changes due to the complexity of the relation among social variables. This study also found that English proficiency has a relation with the preference of request speech formation while gender has a relation with the preference of request strategy use. The directions of further studies were discussed with the limitations of this study.
