This study aims to search the principle of being applied consistently to The Tale of Soh Dae-seong. First, I searched the principle of understanding the text by analyzing the dialogue between Soh Yang and an old Buddhist monk. In the dialogue, Soh Yang realizes that we can reach the reward of virtue by giving alms( dana(다나) 산스크리트어 - ‘보시’를 의미함dana) without staying at the nimitta(니밋타) 산스크리트어 - 눈에 보이는 뚜렷한 표식, 특징을 말함."相"(nimitta, a distinctive mark). This means that dana is the cause and the reward of virtue is the effect. Therefore, The causal relationship between dana and the reward of virtue is one of the principles that could create The Tale of Soh Dae-seong. Second, I analyzed the whole life of Soh Dae-seong as the relationship between dana and the reward of virtue. Soh Dae-seong gives alms good to all human beings, and rises up against the oppression on all the people. He suppresses the attack of the invaders with the help of the supernatural existence whenever he undergoes bitter trials, coming to the throne of "魯". The fact that Soh Dae-seong, overcoming the difficulties, become a king can be interpreted as the reward of virtue for giving alms. Therefore, The Tale of Soh Dae-seong is the work in which Soh Dae-seong's whole life is developed depending on the causal relationship between dana and the reward of virtue. Third, I interpreted the whole life of Soh Dae-seong in relation to The Diamond Sutra 금강경The Diamond Sutra. According to The Diamond Sutra, dana, acquirable with the elucidation of Dharma(드하르마) 산스크리트어 - ‘법’을 의미함Dharma is more valuable than the reward of virtue, acquirable with the giving of property. The whole life of Soh Dae-seong serves to explain the value in The Diamond Sutra that we can attain the holy way by seeing nimitta as what is not nimitta. Therefore, The Tale of Soh Dae-seong 소대성전The Tale of Soh Dae-seong is the work created as the means of explaining readers Buddhism.
